Lewis’s Wild Flax is an Idaho native bloomer with dainty, periwinkle colored flowers with yellow centers that close daily. Although garden flax is an import from Europe, it’s another species that can be found along our trails and looks deeper blue in color. Both varieties have stems that are extremely thin and leaves that are long and narrow. Left untouched, it produces mass type flowers that bloom June through August, and grow between 12 and 36 inches tall. Since Wild Flax normally grows on hills, it’s an excellent choice for retaining walls and terraced gardens, but also looks beautiful in flowerbeds. It grows in full sun happily along side sagebrush, needs dry soil and is drought tolerant. Bees are attracted to the pollen rich flowers that can also be used to decrease the fire hazard around your home.
